History Grants Go To Local Projects

The clickety clack of author Ivan Doig’s typewriter, the howl of wind at the Ringling Depot, the baas of sheep passing through a gate and a meadowlark “singing for all he was worth” are among the sounds collected in the Montana State University’s Ivan Doig Archive.The sounds are paired with passages from Doig’s writings and images from the Doig archive for an interactive experience online.With a new grant comes the next step, which includes chasing the sound of a Chinook wind eating the snow on a winter’s day, the rattle of thunder in a mountain canyon, yarns about harsh winters and other slices of auditory life in Doig Country.The Doig project is among the 28 to receive a grant Wednesday from the Montana History Foundation.
