Mountain West Voices – History In Peril On the New Frontier
The northeastern corner of Montana is a land of dramatic landscapes and is rich in tradition and history. Many of those traditions, and much of that history, exists only in the memories of a few individuals in each community. But those individuals are aging, and, with the influx of newcomers in northeastern Montana, communities have become fragmented and histories lost.
“History in Peril on the New Frontier” used MHF funds for an oral history project aimed at collecting and preserving the stories of individuals in some of the northeast Montana communities where change has been most dramatic as a result of the Bakken oil boom. The stories collected were preserved and archived at the Mondak Heritage Center in Sidney, as well as on the website mountainwestvoices.org.
