Montana Historical Society – Huffman-Cameron Photograph Collections

Many of the significant events in Montana history occurred in eastern Montana: the Indian Wars, the rise and fall of the open range, the arrival of the railroad, and the homestead boom and bust. While the stories of these events are recorded in diaries, books, and newspapers, they can also be seen through photographs.

The photographs of L.A. Huffman and Evelyn Cameron document the life, culture and events in eastern Montana from the 1870s to the 1920s. The Montana Historical Society used MHF funds to add 1,300 images, 650 taken by each photographer, to the Montana Memory Project. Images chosen were the most well-known and popular. Digitization of historic documents and photographs means that not only will more people have easier access to them, but also that their cultural heritage will be preserved.
