Stillwater Historical Society – Museum of the Beartooths – T.T. Brown School

One-room schoolhouses remain one of the most fascinating—and most accessible—parts of Montana history. The History Foundation has funded several one-room schoolhouse restoration projects, including the T. T. Brown School Preservation project in Columbus, MT.

The History Foundation funded the Stillwater Historical Society to renovate the schoolhouse with historically accurate daubing, treat the wood, rebuild the ‘sod’ box on the roof, and plant native prairie grass nearby. These renovations allow the Stillwater Historical Society to continue leading tours of the building, which is essential to a comprehensive picture of Montana’s early-settler days.
