Montana Historical Society – African American Heritage Places

The Montana Historical Society’s goal is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Montana’s cultural heritage, and one important aspect of our state’s cultural heritage that has been historically overlooked is the contribution of Montana’s African Americans. The Montana Historical Society, with the help of the Montana History Foundation, undertook the “Identifying Montana’s African American Places” project to document cultural resources associated with the African American Western experience in Montana. Resources include census and city directory information, family biographies, National Register and Montana Property Record forms, historic photographs, and more.

The 2015 phase of the African American Places project successfully inventoried a large number of statewide properties and compiled a significant digital collection of Montana’s African American heritage resources.
