Montana Historical Society – African American Heritage Places

The Montana Historical Society’s goal is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Montana’s cultural heritage, and one important aspect of our state’s cultural heritage that is historically overlooked is the contribution of Montana’s African Americans. The Montana Historical Society used History Foundation funds to help the “Identifying Montana’s African American Places” project, which documented cultural resources associated with the African American Western experience in Montana. Resources included census and city directory information, family biographies, National Register and Montana Property Record forms, historic photographs, and more. The African American Places project successfully inventoried a large number of statewide properties and compiled a significant digital collection of Montana’s African American heritage resources.
